The Foreign Ministry issued a recommendation to Israelis staying in Ecuador to exercise extra caution, after the country's authorities declared a red alert following the El Nino phenomenon and forecasts for heavy rains and floods.
According to the report, authorities in Ecuador declared a red alert across the country following the development of the El Nino phenomenon, which is caused by unusual warming of ocean waters and affects rainfall patterns, temperatures and winds, and instructed local authorities to strengthen their preparedness. In Ecuador the phenomenon can bring heavy rains, floods, rising river levels and landslides in certain areas, alongside dry and hot conditions in other areas.
The Foreign Ministry recommends Israelis staying in Ecuador keep updated on guidelines from local authorities, avoid staying or traveling in areas prone to floods, landslides and water flow, and avoid crossing flooded rivers, streams or roads even if the water level appears low.
