U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanded on Monday that the Iranian delegation that arrived at the UN General Assembly, which included Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, leave the United States immediately after negotiations reached a stalemate, according to a senior American official and another source with knowledge of the details.
According to the report, Rubio's move was a highly unusual diplomatic step that illustrated the deep distrust between the two countries, against the backdrop of diplomatic efforts that have borne little fruit in achieving an agreement to end the war. Qatari mediators attempted to achieve a diplomatic breakthrough between the U.S. and Iran, but achieved limited progress, with neither side willing to compromise.
"Secretary of State Rubio removed the Iranian delegation, which had already stayed longer than was wanted here. The UN General Assembly is over, so it's time for them to leave," said the senior American official. According to him, on Monday evening, on Rubio's orders, the U.S. delegation to the UN informed the Iranian delegation that Araghchi's delegation was required to leave New York immediately.
The Iranian delegation, including Araghchi, departed for the airport a few hours later and boarded a flight from New York to Doha at 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday. Another source confirmed that the U.S. demanded the Iranian delegation leave, but said Araghchi was scheduled to depart for Tehran on Monday evening anyway.
According to regional sources, Qatari mediators continue to speak with both sides about their compromise proposal. President Trump told reporters: 'We will blow them up or reach a deal, but time is running out. This will end very soon, one way or another.'
