The winter vehicle-lighting period begins today, November 1, and continues through March 31: private cars must use lights on roads outside urban areas during daylight hours as well.
The rule applies every year from November 1 through March 31, as set out in government safety guidance and traffic regulations. This winter's period ends on March 31, 2027. Rear lights must be illuminated along with headlights or the daytime running lights permitted by the regulations.
Taxis, buses and commercial vehicles with a maximum permitted gross weight exceeding 14,999 kilograms must also use lights on urban roads during this period. Motorcycles are subject to a lighting requirement throughout the rest of the year as well, in accordance with the regulations.
The daytime winter requirement does not replace the rules for darkness or poor visibility. Drivers should check that their lighting systems work and understand their vehicle's lighting controls before the season.
