Elkin's visit to Ukraine includes a series of political and historical events, first among them participation in a ceremony marking 85 years since the Babi Yar massacre, in which many Jews were murdered by Nazis in World War II. The ceremony is also expected to include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Elkin's arrival joins a series of visits by senior officials to Ukraine. Recently Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany arrived in Kyiv, his visit accompanied by air raid sirens, explosions and activation of air defense systems in the city.
During his visit, Merz and Zelensky toured the building of Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences, which sustained heavy damage following a hit by a Russian drone last week.
