According to ynet, Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers in Michigan's Senate race and is set to become the upper chamber's first Muslim member. In his victory speech he mocked the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC.
El-Sayed, a physician and epidemiologist from the Democratic Party's progressive wing, called during the campaign for an end to military aid to Israel, including defensive systems. In his speech, he said it was possible to move from inshallah to alhamdulillah and thanked AIPAC for the opportunity to defeat it twice.
The campaign featured sharp clashes over his positions on Israel and opponents' allegations of Muslim Brotherhood ties. El-Sayed denied supporting the movement and said the accusations diverted attention from living costs. His declared victory does not turn campaign allegations into proven findings.
