Jonathan Karlinskski Mashek, 49, from Jerusalem, was arrested Wednesday at the Orlivka-Isaccea border crossing between Ukraine and Romania while returning from Uman after Rosh Hashanah. According to reports, he traveled on a Path of the Righteous bus with an Israeli passport, but border officials detected that he is also a Ukrainian citizen when they heard him speaking Ukrainian.
After checking his details, he was removed from the bus and contact with him was lost. Later, the family was informed he is being held at a military base near Odessa undergoing conscription to the Ukrainian Army. Karlinskski Mashek was born in Ukraine, immigrated to Israel about 14 years ago, became religiously observant and studies in a yeshiva.
His wife Odelle said: Everything must be done to bring him back home. According to her, He has lived in Israel for more than 14 years, he is Jewish, an Israeli citizen, and added: This is not easy for me at all, it is very difficult. A friend from Jerusalem named Nathan opined that he apparently thought that since he has Israeli citizenship, he no longer had any problem in Ukraine.
According to reports, the Foreign Ministry has not yet addressed the case.
