Businesspeople are investing millions of shekels in small soccer teams in Israel's lower leagues, with few fans and virtually no revenue, with no clear way to recoup their investments.
Billionaire Laurent Levy, owner of the Optical Center chain, founded M.K Jerusalem in League 3 in 2019, the lowest league in Israel's soccer league rankings, and became its chairman. Just five years later, Levy set an even more ambitious goal, to reach no less than the Champions League by 2030, as he stated at a ceremony marking the team's promotion from League B to League A in April 2024.
