The US Embassy in Israel issued an urgent alert to American citizens on the night between Saturday and Sunday due to escalation between the Houthis backed by Iran and Saudi Arabia and fears of wider fighting in the Middle East.
The alert urged American citizens to increase their vigilance 'due to tensions in the Middle East' and clarified that 'there is potential for rapid escalation of this military conflict.' The Embassy recommended to its citizens to continuously monitor information regarding airport and airline activity in Israel before their arrival.
'The Houthis backed by Iran are involved in hostile activities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks targeting civilian airports,' the alert stated. 'There is potential for rapid escalation of this military conflict. American citizens traveling to or from the region should closely monitor information regarding the activity of airports and airlines.'
The Embassy also expressed concern about potential attacks on other American targets around the world: 'U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have previously been targets of attacks. Iran and organizations supporting it could attack additional American interests overseas or at sites identified with the United States and its citizens, including American businesses and institutions.'
