The U.S. Embassy in Israel issued an urgent and unusual warning Saturday night to American citizens staying in the region, against the backdrop of escalation between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia and concerns about broader conflict in the Middle East.
The warning called on U.S. citizens to heighten alertness 'due to tensions in the Middle East,' and emphasized that there is 'potential for unexpected escalation.' The embassy recommended that U.S. citizens continuously check the status of flights and departures at airports in Israel before arriving.
'Iran-backed Houthi rebels are engaged in hostile actions against Saudi Arabia, including attacks targeting civilian airports,' the warning stated. 'There is potential for rapid escalation of this military conflict. American citizens traveling to and from the region should closely monitor information regarding airport operations and airline activities.'
The embassy also expressed concern about attacks on other U.S. targets globally: 'U.S. diplomatic missions, even outside the Middle East, have been targets of attacks in the past. Iran and organizations that support it may attack additional U.S. interests abroad or at sites identified with the U.S. and its citizens, including American businesses and institutions.'
