A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay a $25 billion civil penalty for misleading consumers about privacy on Facebook. The company disputes the allegations and intends to appeal.
The decision followed a jury finding that the company violated the state's consumer-protection laws. The case concerns the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which personal information from Facebook accounts was collected for political advertising.
According to the report, Meta rejected the allegations and announced its intention to appeal. The money is intended for New Mexico's education system if the penalty remains in force; it has not already been transferred and is not an approved direct payment to every user.
