UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday there are serious indications that Iran was behind an attempted attack in the southwest of the country earlier this week. His remarks refer to the arrest on Sunday of five suspects in an attempt to blow up a car bomb near RAF Fairford air base, where the U.S. military operates.
According to the report, many British security forces were alerted to the base area and announced a short time later that the incident was under control. The base houses U.S. forces and heavy bombers, and from it U.S. strikes were launched against Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters: 'The arrest in Britain was great. They wanted to do serious damage to our fortress, they were under surveillance for a long time and we caught them.'
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed in an interview with Fox News involvement of a 'foreign actor.' 'Iran has openly threatened to attack American interests around the world,' Rubio said and added: 'We always take this very seriously. This will have consequences if it ever happens or even if attempted.'
