Sales of plant-based milk alternatives worldwide are declining, while cow's milk sales, which are cheaper and richer in protein, are rising again after decades of persistent decline.
According to market research firm Circana, sales volume of plant-based milk alternatives sold in the US fell 5.4% in the past year, with almond milk sales, the most sold type, declining 7.9%. In Britain, volume fell in June at an annual rate of 2.5%, and in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, there was a slowdown in growth. Meanwhile, cow's milk sales are rising again after a prolonged decade-long decline, as consumers return to it thinking it's better for their money and health. Cow's milk contains more fat than its plant-based alternatives, but also less sugar, more protein and costs less.
